Fawna Farms

The project Landpro undertook for Fawna Farms Limited and IFS Growth Limited is truly unique and a first for the South Island.

Landpro

Nutrient offsetting delivers a win win.

At the heart of this case study is the concept of mutually beneficial partnership. The first, a partnership between Dairy Farmer and Forestry Management Company, the second between water quality, nutrient loss, sediment run-off, and carbon sequestration as the cherry on top of cake, and finally between the interested parties and the wider Southland populace. With farm nutrient loadings reducing delivering a better environment and an increase in heard size delivering a better return, this case is a remarkable balance of environment and development that is literally a water quality and carbon win win.

Our Solution.

Overview

Landpro created a scientific and evidence based nutrient off-set strategy to prove that by tying diverse land uses together we can create better environmental out comes whilst improving commercial return.

Strategy

The strategy was to apply for consent to expand dairy activities but through land transference would result in de-intensification despite an increase in hooves on the ground. Achieved by IFS Growth subdividing and selling a block to Fawna Farms to incorporate into their Dairy operation whilst retiring from pastoral use the remaining steeper land on the existing farm block in the process establishing a 287 Ha Forestry block.

Partnership

Landpro’s partnership with AgriAce Consulting Limited allowed nutrient budgeting calculations to form one pillar of the consent demonstrating the direct and proportional relationship and effect on the environment of adding cows to the dairy operation effectively off-set through the tree planting by IFS, which was proposed to occur prior to any herd expansion.

Breakthrough

The uniqueness and importance of this case saw Landpro take the unusual step of requesting public notification from Environment Southland, agreed to by both land owners as they too saw the significant long-term benefit of a test case of this magnitude being successful.

Better Environments

Overall, the models predict a reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus for the proposed expanded Fawna Farms dairy farm and IFS forestry block in comparison to the year ending 2020 land use. In addition the forested area will sequester an estimated 3,660,000 tonnes of carbon over its 28 year lifetime enough to offset the entire population of Gore and Winton.
