Setting a new benchmark for proactive compliance in Otago dairy farming.

Embracing regulatory change.

Under the Otago Regional Water Plan change, all Dairy Farms are required to have effluent discharge permits which is quite a change in approach in the region placing regulatory pressure on farms in the region that have operated in the same way for many years to have a new approach and a change in thinking and mindset.

Our Solution.

Overview

For Dairy Holdings compliance is mission critical and with 8 Otago Dairy Farms in the region their desire was to move quickly and ensure that their farms led the way in the region to comply under plan change 8.

Challenge

The plan change aligned the region with the National Environmental Standards for fresh water meaning Dairy Farms must have sufficient effluent storage on farm to defer your effluent and it can be held until conditions are favourable and it can then be discharged to land.

Complexities

Complexity comes from the size, structure and location of those storage facilities and then the discharge has some controls linked to it around when and where you can discharge to land and how you do that. For farms that have been in operation for 30 years in the region with no regulatory requirement to discharge effluent to land the necessity to comply, not to mention, cost of compliance, is quite confronting.

Compliance

Dairy Holdings perspective was to embrace the change, move quickly to gain compliance and driven by a recognition of the long-term value compliance adds to their business. Both Landpro and Dairy Holdings see these consents as low-cost business insurance if you divide the cost out over the 10 years you hold the consent for despite an initial upfront investment.

Better Environments

Environmentally the return is significant as it moves effluent discharge from falling under good management practice by each individual farm to a more controlled environment where specific environmental factors can be assessed, and best practice conditions and process can be implemented an monitored delivering environmental improvement.

Better Returns

By embracing the change Dairy Holdings Limited is pleased with the outcome from the perspective of the flexibility and business security it offers their operation. Having a ten-year consent in place gives each farm the right to farm and protects the interests over that land as a dairy farm.
